This issue will look at hypnotherapy and explore what it is, why it is used in relation to health and wellbeing as well as how it can improve own life.

The word “hypnotherapy” means “the use of hypnosis to treat emotional problems” (Cambridge Online Dictionary).

What is hypnosis? This can be described as a trance like state that is an intense level of concentration and focus in mind that looks inward to self rather than what’s going on around self.

What is hypnotherapy? Hypnosis is a treatment that occurs between a hypnotherapist specialist and client with emotional issues that may relate to addiction habit. The specialist uses a deep relaxation technique with client to be in a state of trance or unconsciousness which allows the clients mind to be open to suggestions that will reverse an addiction or habit (that is related to pleasure or pain) so that it is not a priority in lifestyle. This also opens up the client to explore inner experiences and attachments used as a (negative) coping strategy. It is a process that is discussed confidentially between client and hypnotherapist before any action is put into place to understand the need and possible solutions from hypnotherapy sessions.

Is hypnotherapy a holistic approach? Hypnotherapy is considered as a holistic approach because it’s techniques can re-condition the mind to remove bad habits of behaviour and thinking which will have a more positive effect on physical and spiritual health. Examples of why hypnotherapy is used? Common reasons for using hypnotherapy are related to debilitating health conditions that prevent client from self development. Hypnotherapy may be used to remove issues such as anxiety, stress, PTSD, phobias, eating disorders, weight loss, smoking habits, insomnia and to manage physical pain relating to migraines, after surgery and autoimmune disease pain flare ups.

Is hypnotherapy effective? Hypnotherapy is more effective when the hypnotherapist and client have a positive and trusting connection because the client needs to allow the therapist to release the conscious mind into a state of unconsciousness so suggestions are giving to client as to how to make the necessary changes to live a healthier lifestyle.A professional hypnotherapist must be qualified and experienced in this role so that the client has safe and confidential experience before, during and after hypnotherapy.

Is hypnotherapy a remedy or lifestyle choice? Hypnotherapy can be seen as remedy to deal with a specific behaviour or mindset that is no longer needed in own life but is a conditioned reactive habit, especially when triggered in certain situations. This therapy can be embraced as a lifestyle choice if it understood to be effective. An ethical psychotherapist will advise how often hypnotherapy can be used as well as any possible risks or effects. It helps the client to develop own positive coping strategies when faced with unhealthy habits.
