Ayurveda is an alternative medical system that uses diet, nutrition, lifestyle and herbs to maintain or repair health. It is a holistic approach that embraces the mind, body, spirit and energy connection. This system focuses on the root causes of health issues and how to understand what own body needs to function properly. Ayurveda works best for those who choose to develop own knowledge of self to understand self. This practice has its own language based on its Indian roots from which it was developed.

When inner energy is balanced then the immune system will be stronger to defend itself against any dis-orders. Ayurveda is best used as part of own everyday lifestyle rather than just a remedy. Health maintenance needs to be a conscious discipline that is part of a holistic lifestyle (in relation to the mind, body, spirit, energy connection).

A professional Ayurveda practitioner can assess the client’s needs by analysing diet, lifestyle and health issues to investigate what the causes may be so that natural health options can be offered. Building a consistent routine relating to diet, lifestyle and issues relating to relationships reveals what it is good for own health and that which is not good for own health.

There are three complex Dosha energies and functional principles relating to Ayurveda and these are Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which also relate to the elements – Space, Air, Fire, Water, Earth. Each of these Dosha are believed to influence a person’s mental, physical and spiritual energy or outcomes:

Vata energy is a combination of space and air elements, which may be ruled by the change in seasons, so it’s important to be mindful to eat natural whole foods and preserve a balanced lifestyle so self-flows from inner energy out.

Pitta energy relates to the Fire element and is affected by the digestive and metabolism because certain foods have a negative impact on this Dosha.

Kapha energy relates to Water and Earth elements, which are focused on emotional intelligence, but when there’s an imbalance, poor diet, food and moods can cause health issues. Each of these principles also identify common characteristic, personality, possible strengths or weaknesses, health issues, dietary considerations, recommended foods and detox techniques to cleanse the body that will maintain or improve health

The principles are too complex to include in this feature, so to find out more about your own Dosha, please connect with our Therapist of the Month for consultation or do your own research to connect with a local Ayurveda practitioner.
