• Limit your daily personal use of digital devices. How long or when devices will be switched off is up to you, but schedule and do this every day to make time for self and others.

• Keep a journal of how much you use your digital devices to buy products. Is there a pattern in your spending and why? Do you replace understanding your emotions with buying objects?

• Have a clean out over a set time period. You can donate items to a charity shop or sell them on E-bay. Ask yourself, do I really need this and why? Note the number and cost of unnecessary objects you have purchased and how that money can be used to invest in self-development and real experiences.

• Learn and practice self-reflection – Does shopping and buying objects make you feel good? What other activities can you participate in that will release happy hormones? For example, sports activities, walking, cycling, meditation or yoga.

• Invest in therapy for mental health issues and to understand yourself better. Is your materialistic need attached to emotional needs? Why?

• Find a self-development coach and participate in coaching sessions that will guide you to understand yourself in terms of abilities and focuses to move forward in own life without the need to attach self-worth to material possessions.
